Barceló, the Privateer
Palma

A place of legend!

Do you know the difference between a pirate and a privateer? Well, privateers had a letter of marque–that is, permission from the king–to attack enemy vessels. The most famous privateer in Majorca was Captain Antoni Barceló. His victories against Berber pirates led to his promotion in the Spanish Navy despite his humble origins. From 1760 to 1769, he sank 19 pirate and privateer ships, took 1600 prisoners and freed over one thousand Christians. What’s more, he was also the inventor of what were known as “gun boats”, boats that could carry up to 30 sailors and a canon. These could manoeuvre very fast to attack the enemy. His grave can be seen in Santa Creu Church in Palma and it can be visited by the public.
