The Jews’ Escape and Condemnation
Palma

A place of legend!

The Jews were persecuted all over Spain and in Majorca for centuries. In 1488, the Holy Inquisition was created by Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabel of Castille to make sure that Jews converting to Christianity–known in Majorca as xuetes–really did give up their Jewish religious practices. The Inquisition terrified and persecuted them, condemning those who disobeyed to be burnt to death in a public square. According to history, in 1688 a group of Palma Jews reached an agreement to flee island and escape the Inquisition by boarding a British ship. They decided to leave port at night so as to avoid discovery, but there was a big storm at sea and the ship was forced to return to port. The Inquisition reacted ruthlessly and many converted Jews died as a result. This tale is no legend. It is a historical event more terrifying than one thousand ghosts or spirits.
