Monk Seal Coves
Artà

A place of legend!

Human activities have led to the virtual extinction of the vellmarins or monk seals that used to be found in Mediterranean coastal areas. They say that today there are only some 500 left in the world. The last time that one was seen in the Balearics was in 2008. In bygone times, they were very common and to demonstrate this, there are places round the whole of the Majorcan coast that bear their name. In Artà, you can find Vellmarins Alts, Vellsmarins Baixos, the Vellsmarins strait and Vellmarí cove, where in 1780 naturalist Cristòfol Vilella found eight monk seals.
