Master Ramon’s Cave
Valldemossa

A place of legend!

Ramon Llull is the most widely known Majorcan intellectual. His works have been studied at universities worldwide. It was at Miramar in Valldemossa where, in 1276, he founded a monastery devoted to studying Oriental languages. Ramon Llull firmly believed in dialogue among civilizations and he travelled to many places to spread the Christian faith. He was also a philosopher and he wrote in Catalan, Latin and Arabic. Almost 250 works by Ramon Llull have survived through to today. Close to Miramar monastery, you can find Pious Ramon’s cave, where he is said to have retreated to meditate and pray. He is supposed to have often been visited by Catalina Tomàs, the Valldemossa saint.
