En Figuera and the Idlers' Bench
Palma

A place of legend!

If you've ever strolled across Plaça de Cort square and looked up, you'll have seen En Figuera. This is the clock and bell that crown the façade of Palma Town Hall. Pere Joan Figuera was the silversmith who made the original bell in 1386, hence the name. In 1863, the old clock was replaced with a new one, which also inherited the name En Figuera.

Built against the same façade, you can also see a bench called “el banc del sinofós” or “the idlers bench”. It’s the perfect place to sit and daydream, watching the hustle and bustle of the city. Anyone who sits there always ends up saying something along the same lines: “If my leg didn’t hurt, I’d probably be getting on with some work”, “if it weren’t for my rheumatism, everything would be all right” and so on.
