They called and still call him by many names:  the Pious Ramon due to his religious fervour, the Enlightened Doctor due to the profundity of his thinking, Mad Ramon because of his sometimes extravagant ideas, the Reverend Master due to his authority in many different fields, or Bushy Beard as a result of his long beard, which hung down to his waist... 

 

What is true is that Ramon Llull often used to climb up to the top of Randa to meditate and to write in the shelter of its solitary cave. He was a tenacious wise man. He tirelessly noted down his thoughts on parchments that turned yellow. On occasions the parchment came to an end before he could express all his ideas..."
