According to legend!

According to legend, in Roman times, a plant called Canary weed grew close to the king of Pollença’s castle. Flavi, a young man of humble origins, found that a red stain could be extracted from the flower of the plant. Unfortunately, Flavi was in love with a beautiful very wicked woman, Valeria, who accused him of theft to get rid of him. Flavi was imprisoned for a long time. While he was confined to his cell, a beautiful kind damsel called Canniana fell in love with him.  She met his pleas and searched the rocks for Canary weed so as to bring him some. He was obsessed with the red colouring from the plant. With it, he dyed the fabric of a tunic called a laticlivi, which became famous among Roman senators. Flavi was released from jail, proud of his success. And what became of the lovely Canniana? They say she died of sorrow because her love for the young man was unrequited...
