Monument to King James
Palma

The monument to King James 1st stands on the spot where Santa Margalida Gate used to be, the gate through which King James’ troops passed when they entered the city of Palma. After the controversy caused by the gate’s disappearance, money was raised to make the statue, with a competition to select the artist who would make it. Although he did not initially win the competition, Enric Clarasó made this statue of the king on horseback, on a stone pedestal, with the figure of an Almogavar soldier at his feet.
