The Moor's Hand
Palma

A place of legend!

The name “Carrer de la mà del Moro” (Moor’s Hand Street) refers to a tragic story that happened there. In 1731, Amet, a young Moslem in the service of Father Martí Mascord, killed the priest with a dagger, driven crazy by his love for the latter’s niece. Amet aimed to steal the priest’s money and flee with his beloved far from Majorca to enjoy a union that would have been impossible back then between a Moslem and a Christian. However, his plan did not succeed and Amet was arrested and condemned to death. On November 15th, he was executed and as a reminder and warning to everyone, his hand was cut off and hung from the façade of the house where the terrible events had taken place.
