Gunara and Ariant Purgatory
Pollença

A place of legend!

According to legend, the rock faces of Ariant valley were formed from the flames of the sumptuous palace of the most beautiful sultan’s wife in the whole of the Mediterranean, Gunara. She was a dazzling-looking woman but she was also cruel. Omar, her hunchbacked servant, declared his love to her but she scorned him and drove him crazy. Filled with hate, Omar planned his revenge. He set fire to the palace at a party organized by the princess. Everything burned and the flames turned to stone. Meanwhile, Omar cut off Gunara’s head and then threw himself into the sea, remaining there forever. Today the valley is still known as Ariant purgatory in memory of that tragedy.
