Joan and Catalina lived in Caimari, a village surrounded by hillside terraces of olive groves and imposing mountains. Every year, it was a tradition for the whole family to go up to Lluc shrine where they lit a candle to Our Lady of Lluc and they prayed to the dark Virgin for her protection. On their way out of church, they would buy multi-coloured ribbons and pin them to their clothes as a souvenir. That year, however, her husband said that the two of them would go alone, with no parents, brothers and sisters or cousins......
